We took a drive through Sturgis to see where one of the worlds largest biker rallies is held. Unfortunately, the main drag was closed for repairs.
After watching the HBO series a while back that made Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane famous we had to check out the town of Deadwood. They had a very cool museum of old artifacts from back in the day and a lot of casinos.
Of course we had to drive by the iconic Mount Rushmore but decided not to pay the $11 for parking and just snapped a couple photos out the window. Sculpture of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln completed in the years 1927–1941.

Also on our way south we stopped at the Jewel Cave National Monument which is currently the third longest cave in the world, with 293km of mapped passageways. They believe that only 5% of the cave has been mapped so far.
The tour involved taking an elevator down approximately 30 stories to our starting point. We walked up and down 723 stair steps along a 1/2 mile loop.

My favourite formation was a long ribbon drapery “The Bacon Strip”.
Cool fact: no matter what the temperature is outside the cave is always 9 degrees.
Very cool!
