Mazatlan Carnival is the third largest carnival, after Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. This years theme was “Patasalada: El Circo de los Talentos”, which translates to Salty foot: The Circus of Talent. It is referring to the many artistic talents of Mazatlan. Last year we watched the carnival parade from a hotel balcony. This year we decided to join the masses at ground level to watch the Naval Combat Fireworks display, Quema del Mal Humor (bad mood burning) and the kids parade. Many colourful hats and costumes.
There were a number of bands playing a variety of different music on the malecon.

We watched the Quema del Mal Humor (The Bad Mood Burning). They usually incinerate an effigy of an unpopular public figure, usually someone famous. Last year it was Donald Trump. It is believed that the burning banishes bad feelings from Mazatlan. This year the figure was the world with fissures in it, representing the earthquakes that have plagued Mexico, especially the region of Sinaloa. As the night progressed it became so crowded that we couldn’t move. After the burning, we decided to make our way to a quieter area to see the fireworks.
The Mexican people sure know how to put on a fireworks display. It was spectacular!
We didn’t have the best spot to take pictures of the parade but it was great viewing the parade at street level. The costumes and dancing were amazing.

Wow! Lots of vibrant colors everywhere..love that.
Good to hear from you, seeing all the colorful fireworks! Mom/Truda/Oma
